Adam Law, M.A., CMPC

A native of Provo, Utah, Adam grew up in sport-heavy family. He is the son of Major League All-Star and former BYU baseball head coach Vance Law, and grandson of 1960 Cy Young Award winner and World Series champion Vernon Law. Adam was a standout high school athlete in three sports and a walk-on college baseball player at Brigham Young University. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft and enjoyed a seven-year minor league career with the Dodgers and Seattle Mariners. Following his retirement as a player in 2019, he was hired by the Los Angeles Dodgers to work as a mental performance coach, a capacity in which he served for four years. He now works as an embedded mental skills coach and assistant baseball coach at Brigham Young University (BYU).

Adam graduated with a master's degree in performance psychology from National University in 2021. Much of his graduate education focused on various performance-enhancing mindfulness approaches in conjunction with traditional psychological skills training methods. Adam’s capstone project was on focal dystonia, more commonly known as “the yips.”

Adam was drawn to the field of applied sport and performance psychology for a variety of reasons. First, he often observed how he, his teammates and opponents would knowingly and unknowingly use various mental strategies to gain a performance edge. Second, he periodically struggled with the throwing yips during his career (as well as chipping in recreational golf) and wanted to discover lasting strategies to help conquer that beast. Finally, given his baseball pedigree, he often felt like he was living in his forefathers’ shadow as he sought to confidently carve out his own career.

Though often underutilized, Adam is convinced that impactful mental skills training is the tool that separates the best from the rest. Just as athletes must train their physical bodies to perform at their best, they must also train their minds. Whether it is confidence, compartmentalization, routine development, thought and/or energy management, or other mental components, there are strategies that can help athletes breakthrough what holds them back, or simply enhance what they already do well.

Adam specializes in helping individuals and teams from various backgrounds win on the margins as they seek to gain a performance edge of their own. Clients have included professional baseball players and golfers, collegiate baseball and tennis players, and high school athletes and teams participating in various sports. He also provides mentorship to prospective CMPCs.
